This has to be the most are-you-kidding-me thusfar I have encountered in the world of online dating.
I receive a message from this man who says "You seem like a good-hearted person from your profile. Do you like sports?"
I go to check out his profile and read about his two kids and how he owns his own business. About his divorce and how he tried to make it work but then figured it best to give up and begin the search for his "perfect" woman. Then the profile progresses to the "must-have" list.
And I quote:
So what I am looking for is this:
1) has to like roller coasters
2) has to like sports
3) has to be happy with themselves
4) has to be a conservative...(if your a liberal PLEASE don't contact me save us both the stress)
5) has to like history, and historical places
6) has to like kids... sorry can't get rid of the ones I have, plus I knew them first :P
7) has to know how to take a joke and dish it out...If you cant dish it out then you may think I'm mean
8) must not be an alcoholic, know your limit PLEASE and dont pass it. Makes for an ugly situation. TRUST ME!
I'm going to break this down because this rubbed me the wrong way for several reasons. This man is searching for his perfect woman. And on top of his list of perfection is a love for roller coasters. This is above "happy with themselves" and "has to like kids." I find that hard to swallow for someone claiming to be a dedicated father, that more concern is place on a love for wild rides than for those children that are the center of his life.
My next perplexion comes from the last enumerated item "Not an alcoholic, know your limit PLEASE and don't pass it." First - what does that even mean? That whole sentence is basically lost on me. "Don't pass it?" So I should not be free to share my beer with others? Second, there is a photo of me drinking a beer. If I had concern about the drinking habits of a potential mate, I might not start my search for perfection by contacting the girl drinking the large glass of beer. Not that a beer in hand automatically screams "alcoholic" but clearly it says this is a person who drinks, is OK with drinking, and, well, you just never know.
Then we move down to "has to be a conservative" and the suggestion not to bother contacting him if you are a liberal because it will save everyone the stress. In some aspects, he may be right. Conservatives and Liberals tend to rub each other the wrong way to some degrees. However, as a 'liberal" myself, I find the conservatives that result in all that undue stress are when encountering close-minded conservatives who have no room to open their minds to even LISTENING to other existence of thoughts on another side of an opinion. I also seem to find undue stress with conservatives who generalize and believe that all liberals and all conservatives are exactly the same and must therefore share all the same beliefs to lead to the conclusion if a person is a conservative, there is no getting along with a liberal.
Personally, I believe I will find happiness with a man who shares similar political views, or at the very least is capable of accepting opposing views and having intelligent political conversations that do not lead to personal attacks based on opposing viewpoints. However, I remain open-minded to all political views because I have met conservative-leaning types who still share some of my beliefs and vice versa. What I do appreciate most about this man's profile is how telling it is about the person he is. While I do not like people to pre-judge me before getting to know me, especially based on a profile, such profiles can help in eliminating people who may be a waste of time. Obviously, we will not all be a match made in heaven for all others, so there has to be some criteria. This particular profile tells me, by not even wanting to entertain a friendship with a liberal, there is close-mindedness and someone who creates generalizations that tend to cause me a lot of undue stress. (He also mentions at the bottom of his profile how, even if a person doesn't like roller coasters, maybe they can still carry on a friendship, but those qualities defined in the above list are his definition of perfection).
I'm not one to talk. I realize, while my "list" may not be enumerated on a dating profile, I very obviously, by these blogs, have one. However, the surprise on my part comes from encountering so many people looking for perfection who are unwilling to entertain possibilities outside the most narrowest scope. But to look at it from his view - he is likely eliminating half the women in the dating pool who may have been interested, so that only leaves 50% of those women remaining to hope that just ONE likes rollercoasters, someone else's kids, and is happy with themselves.
Now the question is do I be polite and grant him a response to clarify not only that I do, in fact, enjoy some sports, but that I am a liberal and thus he should not have contacted me in the first place - there is stress just waiting to happen. Or do I be "rude" and not reply after reviewing his profile and deeming a response inappropriate under his criteria? Maybe I should put on my profile "Please do not contact me with expectation of a response if you enumerate your perfect match criteria so narrowly that only a handful could fit your expectations. Please govern yourself accordingly."
**Edit: I realize now my comment about seeking perfection within the most narrow scope is pretty ridiculous. Obviously everyone's ideals of perfection are contained within a fairly narrow scope. To clarify, it is necessary to cast a larger net in order to find the perfection you seek. If you limit yourself right off the bat so distinctly, you might be missing out on something magical and amazing. Maybe that makes less sense?
